The Beginnings
In the 1920s, entrepreneur Wally Byam started building trailers in his Los Angeles backyard. He used Masonite to create these machines but later improvised the design and used other construction materials to make them sturdier and more reliable.
Wally Byam designed the first travel trailer—a Model T Chassis with a tent contraption on top—for his first wife, Marion James, with whom he used to go camping frequently. Later, he designed a teardrop-shaped model with a stove, an ice chest, and a cozy sleeping space. People loved this design, and asked him to build similar models them.
The demand for these trailers prompted Wally to open a trailer factory in California, where the first Airstream model, the Torpedo, was built.
The Legacy
A select few RV manufacturers could last World War II—Airstream was one of the few that survived. This paid off, and the company soon started building comfortable and affordable travel trailers for outdoor enthusiasts.
In mid-1970, Airstream started manufacturing Class A motorhomes, Argosy, in 20- and 24-foot models. Toward the end of that decade, they came up with Classic—an unpainted aluminum body in 24- and 28-foot models. They continued improvising the size to build more comfortable and convenient RVs for adventure seekers who loved to travel in style.
The Peak
With the release of the Interstate Touring Coach in 2004, Airstream enjoyed an all-time high, which also took its brand value to an all-new level. Later, the collaboration with Mercedes-Benz® led them to build Class B motorhomes on a Sprinter van chassis and gave the brand the recognition it enjoys today.
